On the Baldwin Effect in Active Galactic Nuclei: II. Intrinsic Spectral Evolution

چکیده

We suggest that the growth of the central black hole in active galactic nuclei (AGN) due to the matter accreted over the AGN lifetime causes an evolution of the luminosity and spectrum. In a previous paper we have shown that the effective temperature of the UV continuum spectrum and the emission-lineequivalent width are anti-correlated with the black-hole mass. Here we estimate the change in the equivalent width of the emission lines due to the growth of the black hole mass caused by the accreted material and show that for several plausible accretion scenarios and effective-temperature models the evolving equivalent width is anti-correlated with continuum luminosity, implying that intrinsic evolution could contribute to the Baldwin effect. Narrow Iron Kα Lines in Active Galactic Nuclei: Evolving Populations?

We assemble a sample consisting of 66 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from literature and the XMM-Newton archive in order to investigate the origin of the 6.4 keV narrow iron Kα line (NIKAL). The X-ray Baldwin effect of the NIKAL is confirmed in this sample. We find the equivalent width (EW ) of the NIKAL is more strongly inversely correlated with Eddington ratio (E) than the 2-10 keV X-ray lumin...

The Baldwin Effect and Black Hole Accretion: a Spectral Principal Component Analysis of a Complete Quasar Sample

We have performed a spectral principal component analysis (SPCA) for an essentially complete sample of 22 low-redshift QSOs with spectral data from Ly to H . SPCA yields a set of independent principal component spectra, each of which represents a set of relationships among QSO continuum and line properties. We find three significant principal components, which account for 78% of the total intri...

Baldwin effect for the narrow Fe K α lines observed in Active Galactic Nuclei

The majority of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) observed by XMM-Newton reveal narrow Fe Kα lines at ∼ 6.4 keV, due to emission from cold (neutral) material. There is an X-ray Baldwin effect in Type I AGN, in that the equivalent width of the line decreases with increasing luminosity, with weighted linear regression giving EW ∝ L −0.17 ± 0.08 (Spearman Rank probability of > 99.9 per cent). With curr...

D ec 1 99 8 Evolutionary Baldwin Effect in AGN

Assuming Active Galactic Nuclei are powered by accretion onto a massive black hole we suggest that the growth of the central black hole mass due to the matter accreted over the AGN lifetime causes evolution of the luminosity and spectrum. We show that the effective temperature of the UV continuum spectrum is likely to be anti-correlated with the black hole mass and with the luminosity. We estim...

Emission-Line versus Continuum Correlations in Active Galactic Nuclei

The Baldwin Effect, a negative correlation between emission-line equivalent width and luminosity in active galactic nuclei, is still of interest as a diagnostic of accretion physics nearly thirty years after its discovery. This review examines recent developments in the study of correlations between line and continuum emission in AGNs, as measured both in ensembles and in individual sources.
